My Mastery Journey

Building a Sustainable Career in Games Journalism

For a long time, I believed progress came from waiting. Waiting for the right job, the right connection, or the right moment. Over time, I learned that progress happens long before opportunity appears. It comes from preparation, focus, and committing to the work even when the outcome is uncertain.

Preparation and skill development have followed me through every profession I have held and every hobby I have taken seriously. Learning how to do the job well and improving the skills needed to do it correctly not only helped me personally but also made me more reliable in every role I stepped into. With my creative work, that same mindset applies. I want the work I put out to reflect effort, consistency, and growth.

As I move forward, my goal is to build a long and sustainable career in video game journalism. If that means freelancing for an extended period of time, I am prepared to do that. If it means building my own brand and earning recognition through consistency, that is fine as well. What matters most to me is producing well thought out reporting, staying consistent with my output, and earning relevance over time.

Goal Upon Graduation

By the time I graduate from the Master of Arts in New Media Journalism program, I want to be positioned with a clear direction in games journalism. This means having a focused area of coverage, a body of work that shows steady improvement, and experience across written and multimedia formats.

Graduation is not the finish line for me. It is a point where the foundation should already be in place. I want my work at that stage to reflect discipline, not just interest. I want it to show that I am committed to the craft and willing to put in the time required to improve.

Strategies Guiding My Career Path

Commit to a Signature Beat

The first strategy is committing to a specific beat and producing consistent work within that space. Having a clear focus allows my work to build on itself instead of starting over each time. It also helps me develop a deeper understanding of the topics I cover.

Focusing on one area rather than chasing multiple topics gives me the opportunity to improve with each piece I write. Over time, that consistency helps shape my professional identity.

Build Systems That Support Consistency

The second strategy is building systems that allow me to stay consistent. Motivation comes and goes, but systems create structure. Having a realistic process for research, writing, and publishing helps me continue producing work alongside my other responsibilities.

These systems make progress possible even when time is limited. They allow me to stay disciplined instead of relying on bursts of energy or inspiration.

Use Experimentation to Guide Growth

The third strategy is treating my career as something that evolves over time. Instead of locking myself into a rigid plan, I test ideas, review what works, and make adjustments.

Trying different formats, platforms, and approaches helps me learn what fits my strengths. This process removes pressure and allows improvement to happen naturally through experience.

Build Real Professional Relationships

The fourth strategy is focusing on relationships instead of surface level networking. I approach conversations with the goal of learning and understanding, not immediately asking for opportunities.

Over time, consistent and thoughtful engagement builds trust. Those relationships matter more than quick interactions and play a key role in long term career growth.

Maintain an Independent Platform

The fifth strategy is maintaining a platform that I control. Having a personal publication or newsletter gives me a place where my work lives regardless of changes in algorithms or organizations.

This provides stability and allows me to continue sharing my work without relying entirely on external systems.

Measure Progress Through Improvement

The final strategy is measuring progress through improvement rather than speed. I focus on how my writing develops over time, how consistent my output is, and how much I continue to learn.

This mindset keeps me patient and focused. It allows me to work toward long term growth instead of short term validation.

Community and Professional Development

Reaching these goals requires support beyond individual effort. Being part of professional communities and learning environments helps reinforce accountability and growth.

My professional network allows me to observe industry conversations and learn from working journalists. These interactions help me better understand expectations and standards within the field.

The Full Sail community also plays an important role. The structure of the program and engagement with peers helps keep me consistent and focused as I continue developing my skills.

Mastery Journey Timeline: Goals and Steps

The following visual timeline represents the goals and steps guiding my mastery journey. Each phase aligns with the strategies outlined above and reflects how my focus shifts over time. The visuals associated with each phase are meant to support the ideas, not replace them, and serve as reference points as I continue to build consistency and direction.

Phase 1: Foundation (Now to Graduation)

This phase is focused on building habits and structure. The goal is to establish a clear direction and prove consistency through action.

  • Commit to a signature beat – I have targeted indie games but more specifically Metroidvanias, Story Based and Narrative Driven games

  • Establish consistent publishing – I have begun to do this by publishing discussion board posts after converting them to articles

  • Experiment with formats and approaches – articles, videos and podcasts are all in my wheelhouse but I want to do more on social media

  • Begin building an audience owned platform – I started a Substack and had a Patreon but I need to revise my Patreon

This phase represents the groundwork. The image for this section reflects starting points, repetition, and steady progress rather than finished results.

Phase 2: Positioning (Post Graduation)

The second phase focuses on refining and expanding what has already been built. The work becomes more intentional and outward facing.

  • Expand and strengthen my portfolio – I am attempting to push out the best quality school assignments possible to use or refine for use in articles, videos and podcasts on my other platforms.

  • Build and maintain professional relationships – have really been focusing on building relationships on social media platforms like X, BlueSky and LinkedIn

  • Pitch work selectively and with purpose – I have built a list of websites to pitch my work to

  • Continue refining workflows and voice – Classes like this have really helped me do this by using my planner, looking at my schedule and feedback to improve with each iteration

Phase 3: Sustainability (Long Term)

The final phase is centered on longevity. The focus shifts from building visibility to maintaining trust and adaptability.

  • Strengthen audience trust and ownership – the goal is to provide high quality content

  • Adapt to changes within the industry – the goal is to be malleable and moldable to any changes

  • Maintain a long term mastery mindset – Continuing to reread and learn the mastery strategies and lessons

  • Build career resilience – reflecting back on my professional and academic experiences to maintain resiliency

This timeline is not meant to function as a strict plan. It reflects a process oriented approach that allows flexibility while maintaining clear direction over time.

Conclusion

This Mastery Journey is not about chasing relevance or shortcuts. It is about building focus, systems, relationships, and resilience over time.

By grounding my goals in these six strategies—and in the principles outlined in Mastery, Stretch, and Design Thinking—I am intentionally shaping a career that can adapt, endure, and grow.

Mastery is not a destination.
It is a commitment to the process.
